Introduction

This course is aimed at students in their final year of university or recently graduated young professionals from Central and Eastern European countries. About twelve years ago these countries were transformed into market economies. In a communist country it is ideology not ethics that counts. In a free society the morally autonomous person needs to develop new ways of expressing solidarity and responsibility. Business ethics is important for professionals in trade and business, such as accountants, economists, and managers. This course explains the moral dilemmas of economic organisations, such as companies or action groups, among each other. Then, the course also explains the responsibilities of individual citizens, in their capacity as employees or consumers. There are lectures, workshops and tasks such as paper presentations.

The course teaches the moral strengths and weaknesses of market economies. There are judicial, ethical and organisational instruments that can contribute to the functioning of business organisations in a better way. During the course the students go for an excursion to the Amsterdam Exchange and get to know the work of market authorities. At the end of the course some time is devoted to strategies to foster integrity and counter-measures against corruption, integrity programs, moral codes and other measures inside organisations. Some time will be given to analyse two business cases.
