OSI/FCO CHEVENING SCHOLARSHIPS 2001-2002

The Open Society Fund-Lithuania welcomes applications from citizens of Lithuania for the following scholarships, jointly funded by the Open Society Institute and the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office:

1.       Nine-month Scholarships at Oxford University (October 2001 to June 2002 inclusive) for postgraduate research towards a degree in the candidate's home institution.  Awards may be held for study in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Environmental Sciences or public health/policy related areas of Medical Sciences. The scholarships do not allow scholars to register for a degree at the University. The only exception is that suitably qualified candidates may be able to register for the University's Diploma in Jewish Studies   or
MSc in Environmental Change and Management (12 months).

2.       Twelve-month scholarship at York University for an MA degree in Political Philosophy (the Idea of Political Toleration) (October 2001-September 2002 inclusive).

Eligibility: The scholarships for Oxford and York universities are intended for young scholars who wish to use the experience gained from studying in Britain to benefit higher education in their home country, and who demonstrate both academic excellence and the potential to become leaders and opinion formers in that country.

Applicants must have completed their first four/five years of university study and have obtained, or expect to obtain, the appropriate degree(s) not earlier than June 1998 and not later than June 2001 (although in exceptional cases candidates graduating in June 1997 may be considered). Applicants must be registered, or have the firm intention of registering, for a doctoral degree in their home country and normally must not have spent, or be planning to spend, more than three months during the two years, 1 October 1999 - 30 September 2001, studying in any country outside Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.

 3.       Three-month scholarships for study in Applied Social Studies at
Oxford University for persons working for governmental or public
bodies, who wish to carry out a research project on a topic of direct
relevance to the development or functioning of that body.

Eligibility: Applicants should have a University degree with a high grade and some practical experience, and should normally be between 23 and 35 years of age by 30 June 2002.

 Terms of the Scholarships

All the above scholarships will cover university fees and basic living expenses for one person.  Travel to and from the UK is also paid. Applicants should have excellent academic qualifications, fluent command of the English language, and, if they wish to study at Oxford, a clear and precise study proposal.
